Lochaber Cottage provides an excellent holiday base for golfers, with enough golf courses near Fort William to stay for a week and play a different course each day. The range of courses on offer provides the opportunity to play at the foot of Ben Nevis, beside the old Commando training ground or along beautiful coastline.
Spean Bridge Golf Club is a nine-hole course less than ten minute’s drive from Lochaber Cottage. The beautiful setting overlooking the Second World War commando training ground also boasts mountain views and the adjacent Old Station Restaurant provides a welcoming “tenth hole”. A full day pass is just £18.
Less than 20 minutes from the cottage, Fort William Golf Club is an 18-hole course right at the foot of Ben Nevis. A good, challenging course with fantastic views. Club and trolley hire available from the club house. £25 for a round or £30 for a day ticket.
40 minutes to the north, at the edge of Loch Ness, you will find Fort Augustus Golf Course which claims to be among the most challenging nine hole courses in Scotland. Designed by world famous golf course architect Harry Colt it has dual tee positions to give the course a true 18 hole feel. £10 for nine holes, £18 for a full round, £25 for a day.
45 minutes away, on the road to Glencoe, lies the nine-hole Dragon’s Tooth course. Promising “one of the most dramatic and beautiful loch-side locations in the Highlands” the Dragon’s Tooth is £23 for 18 holes and £27 for a day pass. Traigh Golf Course is a little further (1 hr and 10 mins) – but well worth the trip. The course was described by the Scotsman newspaper as “Probably the most beautifully sited nine-hole golf course in the world” and is a traditional seaside links surrounded by spectacular views and beaches. A day ticket is £20.
